At the time of writing, Donlad Trump and his people have yet again used a faint towards negotiation as a cover to attack Iran with missiles. This time the target was Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. A US official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told the Associated Press and Axios that Iran had been preparing an attack. This must be taken with a grain of salt. Washington has a track record of making such claims, which time always proves to have been falser flags.
It doesn’t make sense that Iran would be preparing an attack when they are in control of the same Strait, and pointedly, they have just agreed to talks on returning to the MoU that Trump had betrayed. The truth is that the United States had failed to secure a victory through military action, were compelled to talk, but really have little interest in a resolution that will spell defeat. Washington’s interest is in prolonging the standoff for as long as possible and hoping something to tis advantage will turn up. The strike against Larak Island must be seen in this context.
Iran has replied to the latest unprovoked attack by hitting United States bases in Jordan. Two air bases were hit. According to most commentators, this is likely to stop at limited attacks from both sides. but it does signal that the heat is rising again and that an all-out conflict can erupt at any time. The main concern is that the routine instigator is the United States is the instigator and that Iran retaliates as it has always said it would if attacked.

Matters have been brought to this point by the continued success of Iran’s ability to control shipping through the Strait, an agreement between Iran and Oman on managing this, the weakening of the Gulf States, and of course, serious damage to United Sates military and CIA basses in the region. There is the Mecca declaration that is bringing together Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Türkiye, with interest form other of the region’s nations. Associated with this is increasing dialogue with Iran. The point is that the United Sates is losing its foothold in the region.
This is the reason why there has been a shift away from the pretend issue of Iran’s nuclear ambitions, towards who controls the Strait of Hormuz. Control over the flow of oil is certainly important. But overriding even this is the matter of ongoing United States ongoing military presence and leverage across West Asia. And this control is important in the ambition to put an end to China’s rise. A significant part of this ambition is to destroy the BRICS alliance. It has built a significant footprint in the region and bring significant economic and political impactions that work against United States dominance.
Counted in must be the effect of Israel’s increasing militarisation to expand its borders and the reaction of the region’s populations to the holocaust in Gaza. Governments find themselves in a place where they have to at least pretend that they are doing something about it and the enabling role played by the United States for its proxy. Rulers have become nervous about the capacity of Uncle Sam to protect their interests. They are looking for alternatives.

War against Iran, whether hot or cold, may well continue for some time. Washington will not pull out willingly. Losing its regional foothold is too high a price to pay. Unless a face saving way to retreat can be found. Finding this is likely to be Iran’s objective, and this is probably the reason why a decision to negotiate has been reached, for now at least.
Washington is finding it extremely hard to deal with others as equals and break the habit of being the global bully. United States imperialism lacks the strength it had in the past, and many more are awake to it these days. Public opinion in all continents has shifted decisively against the United Sates and Israel. This especially includes West Asia.
