These are not scenes from a poor country in Africa, Latin America or Asia, but the reality of life for many in the United states of America. These scenes were witnessed in Los Angeles. They are typical of a side of the United states that is hidden behind the sanitised Hollywood view that we normally get. The gap between the rich and the poor is widening rapidly. And you don’t have to be out of work to be poor and homeless, as a growing proportion of the workforce, is pushed into cheap labour.
Scenes like these should compel for greater justice and of the wealth of society.
Those of us looking on from Australia should not be complacent. This could easily be our future. The number of poor and homeless people on our streets is also increasing fast and the American nightmare could be our future, if we let it happen.
