Destruction of public housing continues in Victoria

By Joe Montero

The Victorian government is continuing with the plan to demolish 44 of the state’s high rise public housing towers and is doing so under the cynical cover of expanding what it calls affordable housing. Thousands of families and individuals will be forced to relocate to the fringes under this plan, away from their communities, with no guarantee that housing needs currently being met will continue. Video: Journalists and their shadows

American journalist, author, commentator, and Pulitzer Prizer winner of Chris Hedges, discusses the decent of the media and journalism into a tool for the powerful with Patrick Lawrence, a fellow journalist, as well as editor and critic. Hedges once wrote for the New York Times, and Lawrence with the now defunct Far Eastern Review, the International Herald Tribune, and the New Yorker. Both found themselves cast aside for standing against the imposed narrative of the tool. That once employed them.

Here the discussion focuses on how the deception to spread ideology that benefits the ambitions of the powerful. They contrast what it means to be a principled journalist or a hack for sale, accepting widespread censorship and lies.

What is exposed here about the media in the United States could just as easily be about Australia, given that Australian media generally echoes its counterpart in the United States. This is a must watch for anyone interested in the truth.

People should focus less on the Trump personality and more on the interests he represents

By Joe Montero

It’s tempting to indulge in bashing Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and other talking heads in the Trump stable. They certainly invite it. But this indulgence can divert from the deeper reality of what is going on. We see this in the mainstream Democrat response in the United States, all too often copied internationally. The Australian government continues supporting United States and Israeli acts of war

Contributed

It seems the Australian government’s support for the American attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities is strengthening, regardless of words about the need for negotiation. in the same way it has used words about humanitarian aid to Gaza, while continuing to give diplomatic and material cover to for Israel’s industrial scale slaughter of children, women, and men. This is from a government headed by a Prime Minister who once marched in the streets in support of Palestinian rights. By bombing of Iran’s nuclear sites Washington has weakened its legitimacy in the eyes of the world

By Joe Montero

The bombing of three of Iran’s nuclear facilities by the United States was a monumental crime risking global war, and predictably, Europe’s former colonial powers applauded. It reveals that the mentality superiority and right to reshape all corners of the planet to their will remains. Then there are one or two little countries like Australia, which refuse to grow up to stand on their own feet and continue to act as a colony. Break AUKUS and chart an Independent Australian course

By Jim Hayes

AUKUS was never a good deal for Australia. Joining in an effort to target China, which is at the heart of this agreement is not in anyone’s interests, but the geopolitical ambitions of the United States. Besides, China is Australia’s biggest trading partner. Taking the anti-China position isolates Australia from the Asia-Pacific nations, most of which are taking the opposite road, isolates Australia from much of the world, and this has an economic as well as political costs. Whyalla steelworks must not be allowed to close

The threatened closure of South Australia’s Whyalla steelworks must be prevented for two reasons. The ability to produce steel products is a key strategic industry because these products are essential ingredients for many of the products we use. A healthy steel industry is essential to the rebuilding of Australia’s manufacturing base, and this is essential for the nation’s future economic prosperity. We can’t just be against Trump. It’s time for a bold progressive populism

For someone who was once Secretary of Labour Robert Reich’s view on the way forward in the political situation currently faced by the United States, is quite profound and important. Protesting the harm the Trum administration is bringing is not enough. The way forward depends on having an alternative to build the future on a foundation of far greater democracy and a fair sharing of the wealth produced by society. There is a universal truth in this, which doesn’t only apply to the United States. The world is being impacted by what Trump and those behind him are doing. This article was published in The Guardian 8 May 2025. Robert Reich is now a professor of public policy emeritus at the University of California in Berkely.
