Tens of thousands took part in Palestine’s Nakba Day marches across Australia’s cities and regions

The Gaza atrocity continues, and Israel has begun another major offensive against the Palestinian territory and the civilian population living within it. Last Sunday (18 May 22025), Australians marched through city Streets in numbers not seen for quite a while. The epicentre was Melbourne, where tens f thousands began a march in the city centre, walked 7 kilometres to St Kilda Beach, stopping outside the United States Consulate on the way. The pause was to focus on the role of Washington as the commander, enabler, and military supplier of Israel and its actions.

Australians joined similar marches around the world.

The occasion was the 77-year anniversary of the Nakba (The Catastrophe), where the Palestinians lost their nation. A statement from the organisers said,

“We mourn and reflect on the violent ethnic cleansing and forced displacement of over 750,000 Palestinians during 1948 and reinforce their right to return.”

A handful of pro-Israel protestors stood at the side with Israeli and Australian flags. But they were overwhelmed by the mass of pro-Palestinians, who despite provocation dealt with the situation peacefully. There is little doubt that this presence was to cause trouble. Police claim that a sign carried in the march that displayed the Israeli flag and called to boycott Israel, would be investigated under the law against Nazi symbols. The Federal Police say they are joining in the investigation. This is a clear case of overreach.Thousands protest through the streets of Melbourne to mark the Nakba

At the St Kilda end, a long wall of small kite shaped notices. representing the children of Gaza killed delivered a powerful impact. Messages were written on these kites.

The bulk of the corporate media acted in the usual way by either ignoring everything or belittling it. This media is partisan on the side of Israel, and this partisanship is shared by the Albanese government and the Liberal Party led opposition. And this is continued through the senior police command.

Australia continues to be a supplier of arms, other material support, and a political backer of Benyamin Netanyahu and his government. They do so merely because the United States administration wields power over Australia and demands it.

denial of public opinion that stands on the other side, supporting the victims of this holocaust and the right to resistance, frightens the deniers. No acknowledgement is given to the fact that nineteen months of big turnouts every week represents the largest anti-war movement in Australian history, is the most steadfast, and determine to continue till victory. It has changed public opinion.

Support for Israel can no longer continue without being questioned, and this is contributing to the delegitimization of their political leadership. The Zionist pro-Israel core has no way to match this, except with its money and influence over the elites it networks with. It has no capacity to generate a public response on the scale of its purported enemies. It relies on provocations, lies, and threats.

The movement in support of the Palestinians in Australia has changed public opinion, and support for Israel can no longer continue unquestioned.

The character of the movement in the defence of the Palestinians is its depth, which realises that the goal of liberation lies in the right to resist, and that this resistance involves opposition to the legacy of colonialism and the imperialism of the United States, which meddles and uses the Israeli regime as its surrogate for geopolitical ambitions and plunder. The movement realises that the Australian authorities are complicit in this.
