The bombing of three of Iran’s nuclear facilities by the United States was a monumental crime risking global war, and predictably, Europe’s former colonial powers applauded. It reveals that the mentality superiority and right to reshape all corners of the planet to their will remains. Then there are one or two little countries like Australia, which refuse to grow up to stand on their own feet and continue to act as a colony.
We saw subservience to a foreign power in the comments of Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles, Foreign Minister Peny Wong, who although not directly supporting the bombing, essentially blamed Iran. all the talk of the need for negotiation doesn’t cover the reality. The Opposition’s Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister Andrew Hastie outlined the opposition’s undisguised support for the bombing. As the saying goes, “those who do not learn the lessons of history are condemned to repeat them.”
Together, they have supported the violation of the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT) and other related agreements, aimed and restricting the spread and use of nuclear weapons. They back a disregarded for other international laws and norms and re-embraced the doctrine of western exceptualism.
Although this little coalition is presented as international opinion, the truth is that world opinion is on the other side. It is not easy for those of us living in the reality of large-scale censorship, where big media does little else but unquestioningly put out propaganda from official Israeli and American sources to see this.
The bulk on nations across this planet have condemned the attack and demand a return to respect for the sovereignty of other nations, and for the attackers to return to the negotiating table. Inside the small coalition of Washington’s supporters, heads of state and their governments stand against public opinion in their own countries. They act in defiance of it. This is true for the United States. It is true of Britain, Germany, and France, and it is true for Australia.
The bombing worsened an already serous crisis, and at worst, raises the global threat of nuclear war.
Iran’s refusal to give in is just, because to do so would be to give up sovereignty; to accept that the people of Iran should not determine their nation’s destiny, because this power is in the hands of a foreign power. This extends to decisions over the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. The age of gunboat diplomacy should have ended by now. Unfortunately, it is still with us.
This is primarily because western imperialist powers are desperate to preserve their empires at a time when they are in decline and other nations rise. The main organised expression of this today is BRICS. Iran is part of BRICS, has close ties with Russia and China, and its geography makes it a gateway between east and west. The attack on Iran is connected to this.
Israel has long been the surrogate of the United States for its ambitions in the region. It arms and supports this attack dog to do its dirty work. It uses Isreal to try and subjugate the Palestinian population and interfere in neighbouring countries. Washington lies behind the continuing holocaust in Gaza. Benyamin Netanyahu is their creature, and they used Israel to launch the first surprise attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities to provide a cover for American intervention.
Israel was never going to maintain this war on its own because it does not have the capability, and the American and Israeli planners of the aggression know this. Furthermore, Israel has been weakened by ongoing resistance from the Palestinians and their allies. Iran proved that its impenetrable Irom Dome is far from being impenetrable.
Does Iran have the right to strike back? Under international law it does. But this is mitigated by the need to secure a ceasefire and negotiation. At the same time, Iran has no choice but to retaliate in some way. Failure to do so would signal weakness and invite more attacks.
The world is now hoping that Donald Trump can see reality and strep back from the brink. He needs a face-saving way out. This may be found. The alternative is to escalate war and drag in other nations. Russia, China, and others are already rallying to support Iran in various ways. It will be much better if this does not take a major military turn. how the world reacts now will determine this.
The United States and its cheer squad must be made to realise this, and to accept that they must adapt to a changing world. The days when they are in control are no more. They are the ones ultimately weakened by their own actions. This includes the Australian government and opposition who have yet again chipped away at their legitimacy in the eyes of Australia.
The days ahead will tell how it all unfolds. all we can be confidently certain of is that there will be a cost to the global and national economies, the world has become a more dangerous place, and that the time western superiority has come to an end. A better future depends on humanity working together to achieve this.
